Unrequited Food Loves: Britannia Cheese Spreadz Classic

In NYC we have access to practically any type of Indian food you could want. There is a short list of unrequited food loves that have not made it to this side of the world however. At the top of this unrequited list for me is Britannia Cheese Spreadz Classic. It was probably the first cheese other than paneer in India I’d had. The spread is buttery and delicate. The color is off-white with no artificial dyes. It goes great with any type of bread or cracker. Only a tablespoon per slice gets you all the flavor you want. (A little goes a long way).  It’s easily my favorite dairy good from India. They sell some cheeses from India here including canned Amul cheese. But cheese in a can? Dairy does not belong in opaque metal.

So a little while back cousins visited from India and asked if I wanted anything. Naturally, cheese was  the first thing that came to mind. They got the original flavor and a new favorite called Amul Punchy Pepper. As I shed tears of joy I immediately placed the cheeses in the fridge. They’d survived a day long journey from India already and the spreadz needed rest.

Since I can’t find the Spreadz here it’s “the precious.” I held onto the original flavor for 2 months before opening it. On top of that I made the container last 2 months after the initial opening. I first had it on white bread in India so I had to replicate that experience. It was delightfully rich and creamy. Just as good as I remember. My favorite combo is having two slices of bread, one with the cheese and one with jam. (To provide contrast). As I neared the end of the container I decided to try it with sourdough bread: equally glorious.

The rationing continued with the second tub, opening it 4 months after receipt. The second spread is actually made by Amul and is called Punchy Pepper. It’s also delicious and provides a little kick. I don’t buy bread that often but had to for this occasion. I’m hoping to extend out another 2 month run out of this one.

I love both my cousins and the cheese. I assumed that the next taste of Britannia Spreadable Cheese would be during the next visit to India. Until then it is only to be spoken of lovingly in story or the occasional song.  My cousin made it happen a lot sooner. I can say without hesitation that Britannia Cheese Spreadz brought my family closer together.

Valentine’s Day Candies of Choice: York Peppermint Patties

In debating candies, you must decide which candies are tastiest and most presentable. In the Valentine’s Day candy aisle of the local Rite Aid, it actually ended up a no-brainer: heart-shaped York peppermint patties.

The Valentine’s patties are shaped like hearts. As a man this sounds silly but for the purpose of the holiday it works. The package is reflective which is fairly unique and kind of gives that icy/minty vibe. The proportion of dark chocolate to mint is perfect. It not quite melts in your mouth.

I also like that it’s not as heavy as regular candy bars. You get a little sugar rush. The mint taste is refreshing. It’s one of the only candies that leave you wanting more.

This is a reminder to add Peppermint Patties to the top of mind list for candies I like.

Snack #6: Haldiram’s Nut Cracker

Name: Haldiram’s Nut Cracker

I’m not usually a big fan of peanuts but as a fan of Haldirams I gave their Nut Cracker product a try. It comes in that odd 7.06 oz packet. They’re described as a “Spicy coated fried peanuts.” They are very tasty. They may be a little spicy for some though – the chili powder figures prominently. The coating provides a very pleasing crunch. A few go a long way as they pack a lot of flavor. It would work well in a homemade Muri type of mix.

Ingredients: Peanuts, Gram Pulse Flour, Oil and various spices

Special Note: Gluten Free

Snack #5: Real Deal Veggie Chips

Name: Real Deal! Veggie Chips

Strange looking packaging? I guess it’s meant to be on a table, not unlike the roodonfood header image. Anyways, these chips are a strange bowl shape but are very addictive. You clearly taste the sweetness of the peas, the primary ingredient. They’re baked and per the package are 80% less fat than potato chips. There is also a sriracha flavor!

Ingredients: Nice short list. Green Peas, Corn Meal, Rice Flour, Oils and Salt.

Special Note: They’re made in Easton, PA. One other claim to fame is that Crayola has one of it’s main offices there.

Special Note: Gluten Free, Vegan (and this is noted on the package)

Snack #4: Archer Farms Black Pepper and Sea Salt Baked Potato Chips

Topping the list this week are Archer Farms Black Pepper and Sea Salt Baked Potato Chips. Archer Farms is the Target store brand. Pretty much all of their crunchies are delicious.

Name: Archer Farms Black Pepper & Sea Salt Baked Potato Crisps

Flavor: Delivers a satisfying crunch with that slight sweetness that seems to always be present in baked potato chips. The pepper and salt add a little kick.

Special Note: Gluten Free

Special Note2: Bag is 25% derived from “a plastic made from plants.” So the bag is a little loud when you handle it but not as loud as those discontinued SunChips bags.

Special Note3: The bag is resealable.

Snack #3: Seven-Eleven Brand Original Kettle Style Potato Chips.

Name: 7-11 Original Kettle Style Potato Chips

Forgetting to pickup crunchies on the way back from the grocery store, I stopped at the corner 7-11. I tried the Kettle Chips on a whim. I learned it’s not just for utility (7-11 store brand stuff is only $2.99). The primary appeal is actually the flavor. Despite the traditional store brand whole Rodney Dangerfield “No respect” thing the 7-11 Original Kettle Chips gives the good hearty crunch you want. They also aren’t terribly oily.

Snack #2: Cheetos “Simply Natural” White Cheddar Puffs

Name: Frito Lay Natural White Cheddar Cheetos

And the award for the food that looks like food you would be rationed whilst living outside of the Matrix or conceived of being by a focus group of little kids goes to….White Cheddar Cheetos (Frito Lay). Not pretty to look at but awful delicious.

I don’t know why but I had the biggest craving for cheese puffs. This bag won out over regular cheese puffs because frankly the word “Simply Natural” was written very large. That really shouldn’t need to be a headline. It begs you to wonder, what’s in the other bags? Regardless I got the bag anyways. What’s amazing is that no matter how many you eat you don’t feel full. Your fingers though get that tell-tale coating of guilt.

Ingredients: Cormeal, cheese, milk. (And mostly other familiar stuff).

Special Note: Gluten-Free

Snack #1: Haldiram’s Plain Bhujia

Name: Haldiram’s Plain Bhujia

At the top of the Indian crunchy snack food charts this week is Haldiram’s Plain Bhujia.

Haldiram’s Plain Bhujia

Flavor: Slightly spicy with a mild sweet aftertaste.
Awesome Because: It’s highly addictive. It’s also fun to add into stuff like dal as well.

Ingredients: It’s made from tepary beans, Gram Pulse Flour (Chickpea Flour), Oil and various spices.

Special Note: It’s worth noting that the snack is both vegan and gluten free (though it doesn’t specifically state this; it is made in a facility that processes nuts though).

Haldiram’s is a huge maker of all types of consumables from crunchies to sweets. Based out of India but they do lots of exporting.

Special Note2: Rood learned of this food via the legendary taxi driver food place called Punjabi Deli in New York City.
