May Food Song of the Month: “Dinner Bell” by They Might Be Giants

For the RoodonFood May Song of the Month we’ve chosen “Dinner Bell.” Like many They Might Be Giants tunes, “Dinner Bell” is both silly and clever. The most obvious interpretation is that the song is from the POV of Pavlov’s dogs, who after conditioning associated the sound of a bell with dinner time (and thus would begin salivating). The lyrics could also be about a glutinous person, finicky but always thinking of food. Who has time to change their dinner jacket? The song is off of the band’s 4th album, called Apollo 18.

Here a few sample lyrics:

I’ve been leaving on my things
So in the morning when the morning bird sings
There’s still dinner on my dinner jacket
‘Til the dinner bell rings

Experimental dog
Salivating dog
Good dog
Waiting for the dinner bell to do the bell thing (waiting for the dinner bell)
Dinner bell dinner bell ring

I don’t want a pizza, I don’t want a piece of (experimental dog)
Peanut brittle, I don’t want a pear.
I don’t want a bagel I don’t want a bean I wouldn’t like (salivating dog)
A bag of beef or a beer or a
Cup of chowder, corn, cake, or creamed cauliflower cause I’m (good dog)
Waiting for the dinner bell to do the bell thing (waiting for the dinner bell)
Dinner bell dinner bell ring

The band is currently touring Australia, New Zealand and the U.S in support of their latest album which is called Nanobots. If you like your songs a little nerdy, you’ll enjoy these guys.

  1. This is one of my favorite food songs, and I’m always on the lookout for more. Great series, I hope you keep it up!
