How to Loosen Brown Sugar

Brown sugar can harden like nothing else. But these tips from Lifehacker show that you don’t have to barbarically hack away at the sugar clump. First off, to avoid clumps in the future, store brown sugar in an airtight container. If the brown sugar is already hardened and it’s not necessary to cook something immediately, place a slice of bread with it. The moisture from the bread will naturally help the brown sugar soften.

If immediate help is needed, use the microwave. In one bowl, place the sugar. In a second bowl or cup add water. Microwave for 30 seconds. You can now break off a few pieces. Continue to do this 30 seconds at a time for a total of around 2-3 minutes. Do you have any tips for preserving brown sugar? Have you run into this problem before?

  1. I have a small baked clay “thingy” that I soak in water and place in the container with the brown sugar. This is effective as both preventative and cure for the hard sugar blues. I picked it up at a kitchen shop years ago and have no idea what it is called, but if you ask, a clerk will surely know what you are talking about.

  2. Thanks for the tip. I have definitely had my share of ‘brown sugar’ clumping issues.

  3. Another method that works great is to put an apple core – same as you did with the bread.
