It’s exciting to see how many gluten free breakfast options are becoming available these days. From buckwheat porridge to cream of rice halwa and now this Arrowhead Mills Quinoa Rice & Shine, the cup (or bowl) runneth over.
Arrowhead Mills Quinoa Rice & Shine ($4.89, on sale $3.49 at Lifethyme) has exactly two ingredients: Brown rice grits and quinoa. It’s gluten free, whole grain, organic and conjured using black magic. In order to be able to compare it to other breakfast foods I gave it the standard breakfast treatment. including cinnamon, nutmeg and sugar.
The instructions suggest cooking with boiling water. The water version turned out good but tasted somewhat thin. For maximum tastiness make it with half water and half almond milk to give it a fuller, creamier taste. The texture is slightly coarser though not in a bad way. I enjoyed it with bananas and dried cranberries on top. The cook time is only about three minutes, which is much quicker than regular corn grits as well as quinoa. I’d definitely buy this product and other Arrowhead Mills stuff again.
Hi! Thank you so much for the recipe! I just bought this hot cereal and was wanting to make it thicker- I’m going to try your almond milk suggestion.
One question for you: Can this be made in advance and stored in the fridge?
Thanks so much!
Alexandra
Yes you can – I’ve found it keeps for a few days.
